Looking forward to working with you

Dear friends,

Last week I was honoured to be sworn in for a second term as a member of B.C.’s legislature. I remembered the excitement of my first oath of office in 2013, and I felt it again. From the welcome of our friends and family members as we walked into the chamber, to the drumming and words of welcome of a Songhees First Nations elder, to signing the roll of MLA names dating back a hundred years — it is an experience that is both moving and an honour.

And this year I saw the same excitement on the faces of fourteen newly elected members of our New Democrat caucus. It was motivating seeing such broad diversity, with greater representation than ever before of all the faces of our community. These new MLA’s are already getting to work for their constituents, and our community office in Fairview has been busy with meetings, answering questions, and giving advice and assistance.

On June 22nd the legislature will finally be called together to determine who will govern British Columbia. As you know, the three Green Party MLAs have agreed to support a New Democrat government led by John Horgan based on a number of principles and policies on which we agree. There are a few more steps before this becomes a reality, and I know British columbians are ready for this very long transition to occur.

I am eager for the opportunity to help bring about the changes that Vancouver-Fairview, along with almost 60% of British Columbians, voted for. Action on housing affordability, better health and seniors’ care, affordable and available childcare, a stable and properly funded education system, promoting a sustainable economy with dependable jobs, and defending our coast — these are the priorities I’ve heard you talk about for years as well.

In the coming weeks and months I look forward acting on your priorities. I also welcome opportunities to meet you at summer events and around the neighbourhood, and to hearing from you when you have thoughts and views to share.

George Heyman, MLA for Vancouver-Fairview
